Welcome to Culm Valley u3a

Culm Valley u3a is part of a national movement that was founded in 1982. The UK-wide collection of locally-run interest groups provides a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun. Members enjoy exploring new ideas, developing new skills and enjoying  activities together.

We meet in local community venues and in members' homes around the Culm Valley in Devon and wherever we meet you can be sure you will receive a warm welcome, make new friends, develop whatever interests you have and have fun. We look forward to meeting you very soon.

Our monthly Members' Meetings are held at 2pm on the first Thursday in the month (except in January). We meet at Willand Village Hall, Gables Road, Willand, EX15 2PL. Arrive anytime between 1.30 and 2.00 to socialise and link up with other members, visit the Interest Group tables and find a place to sit. New members are always welcome.

Our Next Monthly Meeting

Thursday 3rd October 2024

Speaker: Dr Todd Gray

Making his second visit to our u3a by popular request, the exalted historian Todd Gray will inform and entertain us in a particular aspect of the 16th Century's way of life.

Insults tell us much about society and offer a fascinating insight into Devon five centuries ago.  He's examined a range of original documents to show how Devonians deployed a range of words and terms to ridicule, mock and demean their friends, family and neighbours. Low intelligence, dishonesty, witchcraft, disease and most of all, illicit sex, were at the heart of how people in Devon were insulted. Men were treated differently than women, those in authority had particular scorn, and physical insults were commonly deployed. This study provides a fresh way to understand Devon in the time of Raleigh and Drake.

According to Dr Gray our talk (and the book on which it's based) are not for those who are easily offended! So please brace up for what I'm sure will be an eye-opening and sometimes hilarious afternoon's talk.

What is u3a?

u3a brings together people in their ‘third age’, i.e. the age when you have finished working full-time or raising their family and have time to pursue and develop their interests and explore new hobbies.

For u3a members learning is its own reward, as we socialise and learn for pleasure, in a friendly and informal environment.
